The Philip C. Jessup International Law Moot Court stands as one of the oldest, largest and most highly acclaimed Moot Court Competition worldwide, with participants coming from approximately 600 Law Schools from around 100 countries and jurisdictions. This competition simulates a fictional dispute between states before the International Court of Justice (ICJ), the principal judicial organ of the United Nations.
The 2021 UPH Jessup Team has concluded the 62nd Philip C. Jessup International Law Moot Court, participating both in the Asia Pacific Friendly Regional Rounds held in February of 2021, as well as the International Rounds held over a 5-week period between March and April of 2021.
The 2021 UPH Jessup Team comprises of Arianne Kumara (FH-UPH 2017) as Captain, Louisa Syaura Amalia (2019), Clement Alexander Djuli (2019), Kayla Latisya Faza (2019) and Andrew Daniel Djapri (2020), along with two observers, Christelle Clairine Siregar (2020) and Cloudio Ardelle Hitipeuw (2020).
Teams face another challenge of mooting in a pandemic, with the oral rounds held over an online platform for the very first time.
Democratic State of Ranovstayo with issue’s very near and dear to everyone, mainly relating to a fictional J-VID-18 Pandemic that has led to a dispute regarding the rights and obligations of a state to regulate its health measures as well as the highly contested right of states to use force anticipatorily against a civilian aircraft mistakenly perceived to be an imminent threat and diplomatic asylum.
In the Asia-Pacific Rounds, UPH faced teams from International Islamic University Malaysia, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, Universitas Padjadjaran and Universitas Parahyangan. The team managed to finish as the 11th highest ranked team, as well as the 4th Best Respondent Memorial, and the 6th Best Applicant Memorial.
In the International Rounds, 2021 shows a return of the UPH Jessup Team into the Advanced Rounds of one of the most prestigious International Moot Court Competition, being one of the 168 teams that qualified from approximately 600 teams. At the preliminary rounds, the UPH faced off with teams from the United States of America, Canada, People’s Republic of China, and India.
Proceeding to the advanced rounds with 5 other teams representing Indonesia, UPH faced off against teams from Indonesia, Thailand, Philippines, and the People’s Republic of China and was able to advance as far as the Elimination Rounds, finishing as one of the Top 48 Highest Ranked Team from around world and ranking 38th in the Hardy C. Dillard Award for Best Combined Memorials Awards.
The achievements of the 2021 UPH Jessup Team cannot be separated from the support given by the faculty advisor, Ms. Jessica Los Banos; Team Coach, Hanna Yovita Onggano (FH-UPH 2015) and advisors, Tiffany Revilia Jonan (FH-UPH 2016), Olivia Karlina (FH-UPH 2017) and other ILMCC alumni.
The team was also fortunate to receive guidance from outside counsels, Dr. Jason Bonin (Foreign Counsel, Adnan Kelana Haryanto & Hermanto), Ari Bessendorf (Foreign Legal Consultant, Ginting & Reksodiputro in association with Allen Overy), Astrid Desmonda (White & Case in Association with Witara Cakra) and David Smith (Staff at the United Nations Secretariat).
In their interview with Panah Kirana, the Jessup team expressed their elation at their achievements and in being able to continue the highly distinguished history of UPH in the Jessup. However, the team is fully aware that this achievement did not come easy and that more hard work is required for the following years to mirror this year’s achievements.
